Roadblock
Foursquare, swaying, her belly low,
striping the air with her day-night face
she edges from the copse.
Dawn and dusk brindles her back,
a shake of yellow soil on her nape.
She fords a strange river,
car-fume - tar-reek - tyre burn,
her memory held to a deeper flow,
tracks before star-maps, setts before barrows.
Then comes the roar, white glare -
a thud, screech, and the car hurls away,
its driver less than a predator
not even pausing for her meat.
I find her wedged in the road.
Still warm, ice-hard, a boulder.
She baffles the muscles in my arms.
Stooped to her hill, I drag her to grass.
Wheels eat miles. Steel careens.
No land, no life, just an in-between.
Down-road the corpses spread.
No green for them. Just red, red.
