Tomorrow Is Another Day
Daylight and shadow reflect off her face
as she talks of the sad feeling,
of a baby’s cry echoing in the dark.
At 40 she is opening the curtains,
watching her son grow into his father,
but the yearning still aches in her side,
spills in her head. A square of light,
and time narrowing it away.
Her mind caught in the swallow shadow
has boxed edges. She folds her life in and out
of the neat drawers of the tidy bungalow,
dusts the rims of pictures
where dust has no time to settle.
The afternoon soap is pregnant with children,
the adverts show the softness of baby-grows
washed in gentle detergent.
Babies demonstrate the leak-proof
disposable nappy. She nurses
her son’s old teddy, to seal her from
the sad feeling of a baby
that seeps through her body.
When her son returns from school
tea isn’t ready. She’s up in the attic
in old suitcases of milk soft shawls,
the tiny sorrow of small outfits
sealed away in the hot house roof.
