View from Shanklin
At last
A horizon unimpaired by the island!
Sea and sky, with barely a ripple
Disturbing the face of either,
Meeting like a vast, newly opened oyster,
Clasped between a left and right arm of cliffs.
Seagulls paddle in the shallowest, end-of-wave water.
A splash of a shaggy dog launches himself
After a stick thrown by his master.
Deckchairs well past their silver wedding
Sit conservatively on the newly-washed sands,
Commenting on the blur of a ship
Tracking along the rim of the world.
Beneath my balcony,
The roar and grind of the dustcart,
As two men bring it its breakfast
In a giant green bin.
