Jim Burns
Domestic scene
He is talking to her, and she
is examining her fingers.
“Oh, look,” she says, “this one
is longer than the other hand,
let me check it against yours.”
He is surprised, and wonders
what her hands have to do
with existentialist theory
and American films of the Forties.
“There’s this scene,” he says,
“where the woman wants to kill someone,
and is wondering how to do it.”
He pauses, and looks at her
as she continues to hold up
both her hands thoughtfully.
“I don’t think you listen to me,”
he complains, and she says, softly,
“No, but I hear you all the time.”
