You didn’t wear them, though the way you saw us
was tunnel-visioned, frozen in a frame.
You dazzled me with counterpoint, deliciously
postponing consummation through rose-tinted afternoons.
But afterwards, didn’t you always put glass between us,
your sliding window, keeping out complicating weather?
I was your Sleeping Beauty to be plucked
from her glass case every other Thursday. During term.
Love’s seedlings parched and withered under glass.
Yes, we might have grown to hate each other,
but suppose... I think of you still,
your myopia, your passion for stained glass.
Carole Satyamurti has published four collections of poetry, of which the latest is Love and Variations (Bloodaxe, 2000). She received a Cholmondeley award in 2000.
