Kimchi
- Pusan, South Korea
She ferments cabbage and cucumber in seaweed,
mixing in salted fish paste, abalone, vinegar,
diced red peppers. Wipes a film of steam
from the tiny kitchen window, with its view
of late-night drunks who have stopped to sing
on their way home, a traditional song of birds
returning from over the water, slurred by soju,
as her hand slides up and over the hollow
to where her breast was before the surgery.
She's thinking of her husband in Hae'undae beach,
the hard fingers of his hands, how they taste
of salt, how they must rise over a dancer's
nightclub body, tonight, her lifting curve of flesh
embedded with an aureole stem, broken
and tender, his mouth filling with the heat of it.
