The Other Mrs Jones
lived in Grandma’s house
in the cupboard under the stairs
and emerged one afternoon
to smoke Sobranie Cocktails,
drink percolated coffee
instead of weak tea
and kiss the vacuum-cleaner salesman
full on his busy lips.
The other Mrs Jones
danced the tango in broad day-light
and squandered her pension on lingerie
and the three-fifty at Kempton
and didn’t clean the oven
or save string and rubber bands,
or stock-pile tinned pineapple
or listen to Grandad
because, she said,
life’s too bloody short.
