The Nile Fish Gasp In The Plastic Bag
Sun stretches shining bar
of gold across the Nile.
Abu speaks American
casts out red fishing rod
into the bright water
baited with fresh green weed
from some other river
he tells me he fished
for weeks without catching
anything, till the locals
told him to use this special
bait; fish flutter
in the bag
I’m right of dying
I’d like to put them back.
The sun sets, making
colours run into blood;
buildings become biblical.
And England’s winter
is a long way away.
Seven kingfishers flick
their tails in the rigging
of a boat, sixteen ducks
skim their way up stream.
Fishermen cast out nets.
Felluca full of Japanese
children laugh crazily!
as they come in to land
after a day trip out:
smiling oval faces.
Red tip of the sun sinks
down, leaving ruby smudge
of sky, and the midges
gone away; the bronze
path just a memory.
