First Times
At last, she's receptive to the tenderness
she'd not have recognised,
still less deserved, till now.
Unconcerned, she lies beneath their looks -
the two men's, the youth's -
cannot prevent the sweep
of the attendant's hand across her forehead,
Welsh-combing it clear of hair,
nor its yellowing skin
from receiving her son's kiss,
who never kissed her this way before,
nor the curious stare of her grandson,
seeing, laid out in this mortuary,
what a book, years later,
will assert we are all afraid of.
