Bricks In The Snow
After the factory - ‘A’ levels at the Tech.
For six weeks I didn’t know
where I was.
The Sociology lecturer told us
to call him Rob.
I’d stay up late, listening
to the Byrds, reading
The Coming Crisis of Western Sociology.
‘That’s why you’re here,’ said Rob,
grinning cynically through his beard,
‘so you won’t have to do that.’
Outside, builders
humped bricks in the snow.
The Silent Ones, who did Business Studies,
wrote down, ‘That’s why we’re here,’
as they wrote everything down.
On the site, a bloke was chucking
bricks to his mate up on the scaffolding.
They flew red
through falling snow.
Every one caught clean.
When I return, Rob is fatter
than I remember - beer.
‘You were one of our successes,’
he jests.
I grin cynically back.
