David Horowitz
Sunday 9.30 pm
Along apricot shore, horizon's cirrus streaks
Levitate. Slate blue peaks silhouette distance,
And city lights sequin darkness. Far shiplight speaks
The silence past busy existence.
Already brown bag lunch chills in fridge.
Alarm set, bed warm - he's tired, sore.
He watches traffic scoot the freeway bridge.
Two thoughts flare: Do well at work! and What for?
Routine insists on caffeinated pace.
He rents his time through afternoon.
Now evergreens point through blue-black space
And graze the quarter moon.
Such beauty! and through it, and humour, art,
Compassion, strength and wit, he can endure.
Up at six! Yes, up at six, sighs his heart.
No day is simple, no satisfaction pure.
