To 2 men and a woman arguing loudly on the train
Like there are these things
like cast iron pans, like
really, really, heavy, and it is
better not to fling them,
not to go on and on
until the larder is bare, until
hands are empty and
an apology
is stewing.
And it is better
I did not know
about the man in the bobble-hat’s
truculent son or the dark one’s
degree course, or how the woman
does all the cooking
and the washing and how if
you lot don’t like it, you
can get your own bloody tea
But I do, I bloody do
and also about the lamb chops
in the freezer
and it reminds me
of evening meals long ago
with Mom and Dad
at the top of the table,
sitting in silence during the news
eating that bleary tired gravy.
