Liberty
The cats of Liège, excluded
from the guest bedrooms
of allergic Englishmen, sleek
and ever self-contained,
tuck their legs under and perch
on stools to perfect indifference
while ironing and undergraduate
essays pile around them
on chair and windowsill and desk,
until they finally condescend
to notice the stubborn optimism
of March, anticipate the open doors
they’ll wander through at will
to sniff the busy air, preferring not,
it seems, to be as free as birds.
