Lara meets Dr Zhivago at the News International Dispute
I met him on a demonstration.
We were running from horses’ hooves
and shields used like batons.
As we tried to climb a barrier
I said I couldn’t get my leg over;
he said he’d be glad to help.
In the clamour of the Wapping night
he charmed me:
I forgot why I was there.
There were no stars above,
just great floods of orange sky.
All around us, shouts and shoves,
uniforms and megaphones.
In the small hours we stood on Tower Bridge,
listening to the distant rumble of loaded lorries,
watching the lights on the river,
our substitute for a starry night;
hands clasped, faces close enough for breath to mingle.
Climbing barriers wasn’t a problem any more.
