The Land’s End
Would you look at the empty sea,
not a ship in sight
and this in the mouth of the Channel.
There is the Wolf, the Longships Light,
the horizon clear all round.
Where are the ships,
the cargoes, where is the trade?
Would you look at the dying sea
beating against this cliff,
the foam a coffee-brown
filled with filth,
oil, sewage, soap.
Fat gulls scavenge
tide-lines of plastic and scum.
Would you look at the fished-out sea
and think of the shoals you saw
boiling beneath your bows.
Would you think that men still fish,
clean oil tanks out there,
throw plastics overboard,
pump sewage from the shore.
Should you look at this empty sea
it will be dying before your eyes.
