Miracle
‘Now we’re talking’, up into
Bluer heights, beyond the craft
Of towns, our tyres able to scorch
Gravel, and insects sticking to windscreens
Like well-spent hours;
‘A need here, good workers’, the roadside flowers
Bend their heads, listening:
The distant hum of the bread factory
Fills the air with life, a giant basket
Set down in the valley, its handles gleaming.
‘Two dollar multiplier, followed up
To four’. Somewhere the fish are jumping,
Miraculous in silver light
Like coins entering slots in a cool machine,
Buying their dinner of winged surprises.
‘We’ll kill it up here’, a finger accusing air,
And the curtain of four o’clock falls,
A carpenter is unseen, measuring light
With his naked pencil, recalling a boy
Nervous with his satchel of dusty fishes,
His crumbling, broken loaves.
