Grandmother's Footsteps
A wax of ice has sealed the pond’s preserve
and the stream has swirled a sculpture at its edge.
Spring hesitates, keeps in reserve
the warmth we crave. Huddled by the hedge
snowdrops are merely slips of grass, milk tips,
their bells unpealed. This St David’s Day
will fanfare no saffron. The season creeps,
a tantalising game that children play,
forward then back; intrepid sun
scared off by sudden squalls. Yet all’s not lost,
for cloud and wind throw benison
of light on here a field or there a mountain crest.
