Haiku Scotland. Ed. F. Henderson. This new publication is currently “seeking contributions and support” and “is interested in haiku, senryu, tanka, aphorisms, epigrams and all associated short poetry forms.” The first issue comprises four sides of A4, densely packed, but nicely laid out poetry from, at present, ten contributors. The poems are all in English, not Scots, though, as we know from the contributions of Bruce Leeming and Stewart McGavin in The Iron Book of British Haiku, there is a thriving tradition of Scots haiku. The offerings are an interesting mix, mainly fairly independent of the “consensus” guidelines, and tending towards the aphoristic and witty one-liners.
The magazine may provide an interesting new outlet for all (not necessarily Scottish?) writers and readers of haiku and short poems. All correspondence (SAE) and subscriptions (£1 per issue) should go to F. Henderson, at Haiku Scotland, 2 Elizabeth Gardens, Stoneyburn, West Lothian, EH4 8BP
Sweeping up the Stars. Ron Woollard. Hub Haiku Series 2004. £4.50 available from the author.
A well produced 70 page collection of haiku and poetry in five sections from this fine long-standing haiku poet.
A Moment Is Forever, by Stanley Pelter. Hub Editions, 2005. ISBN 1-903746-48-5 A highly original collection by Stanley, generously offered as a Gift book, and full of ideas, haiku, haiku sequences, drawings and photoart. Colourfully produced by HUB, this tour-de-force follows on the previous collection, Pensées, in much of its individualistic rationale. Don’t look this gift horse in the mouth.
