Stuck in Dalston on a Noisy Evening
(New Year's Eve 2004)
Whose road this is I think I know,
None of us are sleeping though;
Battered by music that thumps and leers
From the sullen squat across the road.
My little cats flatten their ears,
They think the music very queer.
It is certainly more than we can take
On this last evening of the year.
The cats are convinced it is a big mistake,
As the base combs our brains with its iron rake.
The only other sound’s the sweep
Of occasional car, the night-bus engine’s ache.
The night is lovely if you can sleep,
But not possible while the music leaps,
And I have hours to go before I sleep,
And I have hours to go before I sleep.
