C130 makes three passes
the first at altitude
to judge the lie of the land
but most to let them know
it has arrived
the drop will follow shortly
Second run at low level
quartering the dropping zone
as the crowd forms
young men still able to run
the babies the older the hungrier
lagging unwillingly
Final pass as rear doors gape
black specks spew
twist into white bundles
plummet and thump clouds
of haboob dust
on the parched target ground
C130 climbs away at once
while hands scramble to pour
millet into cooking pots
boil up the kisra porridge
as if not able to look back
its mission to drop grain not hope
