The other side of the street
Angels climb concrete steps,
the ones with green tubular railings.
They carry wine boxes
and baguettes wrapped in tissue paper.
Their faces shimmer.
You can’t tell if they are happy or sad.
There might be singing,
but traffic is heavy –
buses accelerate away from stops,
a lorry idles as it waits to pull out
round a pile of mattresses
eight or ten high, into which
the angels plummet out of the sky.
the ones with green tubular railings.
They carry wine boxes
and baguettes wrapped in tissue paper.
Their faces shimmer.
You can’t tell if they are happy or sad.
There might be singing,
but traffic is heavy –
buses accelerate away from stops,
a lorry idles as it waits to pull out
round a pile of mattresses
eight or ten high, into which
the angels plummet out of the sky.
