The Discarded Theatre
As a lonely chandelier sways in broken tones
To the forgotten darkness.
Silence reverberates in the longing of the
Motionless air, and the deserted hall sits lost
in the chilled atmosphere.
Was it really lives ago that players here
Abandoned songs in the touch of time ?
Heroic voices once rang confidently
Through these walls:
Now shades echo in the still balcony, whispering.
It was an age ago that the fine spot-lit beam
Sought dramatic action on this wasting stage.
Now the audience have left the gasps,
In a life deplete, to faint shafts of intruding light and the weak
Thoughts of damp chairs among remnant litter.
A low, hollow dusk has fallen on this discarded hall,
And a dull tone of a final chandelier
Takes the last remaining bow,
Under the shame of dereliction.
