Conversations with Kuia, Kaumatua
I am beached on the reef of you
where the tide thunders in from the ocean
here I cast my net in the groove
where water floods through to the inlet
and wait for small fish
footprints in moonlight indent the skin of the sand
we all made our way to this place where sea
pounds the land on the shore
(a trespass by starlight by sea ship or earth circling jet)
clouds shuffle and slur over the sky
wrathful and grumbling make room for the sun
for more house guests who may never go home
I fill a bucket with tiny tails
carry a thousand silver eyes
watching me silently wary
later I take them out
lay them down
cut them open
look for bones
find nothing
feel only enchantment
punga fronds unfurl
beckoning fingers
fringes of bush
calling me
deeper into
the heart of
the cloak
of your
