Two men in a field
for Robert Bly
Ploughing by moonlight!
And the tractor’s gouging appendage
Sending back a fine spray of moondust--
Rattling and creaking, every cog unoiled,
As a man walks a silent path by the unversed edge
Twilight three quarters noon in the sky
A star with its own aureole too
The glowing cowparsley in bridal bouquets
Two strangers who will never talk
Who would tell this story in completely different ways...
The tractor dissolving in the far depth of the darkening field--
And the lights of the barn guiding the other man home
As he sits in the lamplight, pencil poised,
Hearing him leaving for the road.
