The Sabbatarian
Out of the sabbath dawn
clatters
an onomatopoeia of church bells
in a fugue of heaven and hell
to the unwilling suburb. Over
boilers in the crypt a frayed verger
rocks in unison
as wisps of warmth take
purgatorial comfort to the pews.
The sabbatarian scoops up his
milk and papers (the News of the World
folded inside the Observer) and
pours radio and light over
his tea and toast. In the high
street he fills up at the
independent garage and chooses
prizes (statute-regulated) from
an obliging shop for the bingo-bazaar.
At church the preacher sings of Palestine
and sin.
In the afternoon he writes pungently
to MPs against noisy commercial
sabbaths that would make men work.
