Glances. Stares. Fur
on the threshold
brushing your leg.
The bristles of a trunk
searching your skin
at the back of your neck.
Or nostrils
sniffing at your head
while you sit in the field.
Hair. Grass.
The packed mud and grit
you struggle against
under the hoof.
Dishes. Bowls.
The regular re-filling.
Glances quickening
like fire
when the moment comes.
Or before, the sphinx stare
in the eternal present
of the wait.
Hands delivering.
Stroking skin, and fur,
to reassure.
Hands. Food.
At the end
the same.
Then, our table talk.
Time's pool expanding.
And all around
the quietened stare we want.
