Signs
Within your sealed world are two signs:
toilet, biscuit. And rhythm, rhythm, rhythm.
For four years now we’ve helped you don
the safety-hat, encouraged you on
the mounting block, coaxed your flying hands
to perch on the pommel, settled your feet
in stirrups when they wanted to migrate.
And on sunny days you sang
to a tune we did not know.
Turn into the middle and ... halt!
Can you spread your arms like this?
Our eyes are always on you, just in case.
Suddenly you copy her crucifix,
widening your potential,
putting the sign for joy on every face.
