Listening to Joni Mitchell's Blue
With music in his head
he'd stood on the ledge of the City Hall,
an up six colonnaded storeys and basement below,
swayed in the breeze of an indecision,
felt the tidal affectation of the moon
pass over and freeze him to the Portland Stone.
They had ladders and nets below,
blue uniforms and flashing lights
which made it all the more
attractive like jumping into a candle-tree,
the brilliants for accepting his body and soul.
They suggested he remove the phones,
talk perhaps if he could,
as he turned up the volume to go
over and over like a tumble-drum,
the sorrow-song in his head
between the ears, an unspecific place
and drifted in the lifting breeze as a hand
reached out to grasp and caught
only the walkman cable.
