Yellow Moon
My husband once told me
Li Po died
saving the drowning moon
from the embrace of the Yellow River.
In all her fullness, in the afterglow
of the bottle, she must have looked
so beautiful. Her moon face blown into shadow
by the swaying birches. He, wet with anticipation
of holding her in his arms - a lover worth
dying for.
After a midnight storm my husband
dove into the river.
Stood on the wooden bridge and leapt
into water
swollen and tidal.
Swam to the centre where the drowned
congregate
and stepped into darkness,
his beautiful hair flowing like water.
In my dream in the early hours,
he comes, explaining the comfort of water,
warm as a bath
but somehow transcendent -
at one with the reflected sky
embracing the Yellow Moon.
