When the club unseethed
he spilt onto the neon pavement
his brain fermented
with the new morning air,
dangerous with drink
he howled at cars
before passing a skip
filled with broken masonry;
a discus thrower’s arc
flashed through his legless mind,
he wanted confrontation,
didn’t require tender arms
or any silken embrace.
but needed to see blood
pollocked on a stranger’s face.
Dazed and blazed,
his white heat confusion
prowled the tall streets
as he found the uniformed
desire of his damaged trough,
the sluice gate of his violence opened,
a carrying-off by his angry hate.
It was later that same morning
the hospital wired the victim’s jaw,
a metal cage instilled for a vanished smile.
