Prière de composter vos billets
On my way to the graffiti-scratched Gents
on the platform at Valognes
I pass the ticket validation
machine with its strange invocation:
‘Prière de composter vos billets’.
After the long trek to the shrine
their card was stamped.
Hence the name: Santiago ‘de Compostela’.
Once in the South West
we followed the pilgrim route for a few kilometres
and found a bathing place in the chalk stream:
a rounded groove worn by countless backsides,
a graffiti scallop shell in the rock.
Paperwork, ablutions, a life, sorted.
Should I now walk to Finisterre,
to the end of the earth, to Compostela
to have my ticket stamped?
