Edward Cummins
Names
Is that bird a goose which lost its way
flying East along the Esk?
Neck stretched gracefully and white it glides
over tinkling waters stained
brown by Pictish hills above the glen.
We who sit together in the stone
carved recess of moss and fern
feel our fumbling way through woven wool
covering remembered selves.
Landing on the pool below, the long
feathered neck floats down on air,
chilly in October’s doubtful dawn.
We hold hands and breathe the names
parents once bestowed on us.
Is that bird a heron, goose or crane:
I do not know and do we care?
Taking to the air again it lifts
over water, trees and ferns.
Feathers preened for speed soar out of sight.
Almost motionless a tangled vine,
scented sweet with tropic oils
catches nostrils as it stings the eyes
closed in my knowing unbelief.
Moistened lips baptise the white-necked swan.
