In The Borders
Where grey gives way to fingers
of light leaching thin blue milk;
where a lour of cloud lifts in a sudden
brightening then shifts, in moments,
back to black, the margin of land blurs,
dissolves boundaries. Here, a hill astounds:
standing off then closing in, its unfeatured black
fading, greening to grass and tree.
You touch my fingers, linger in the breaking
light - retreat as the sky slithers sideways,
slips its muddy flanks to where land smudges
into it and cattle silhouettes hang, paper flat,
upon the edge. Here, where constant cattle
creep across their thin cow line, we dodge
shadows, redraw borders; I watch and wait
for them to tumble down, hoof over hoof.
