Snowfall
How snow obscures a landscape is the best
measure of memory messing with time. The crack
and fall of tree reveals a split I’d lost
in old grass, a trail grown shallow, a slack
loss of love. It is white now, and white
on white anchored only with split scatter of fall;
a litter of empty. Where are we when like late
sparrows in spruce-shelter we scratch through sprawl
of fallen seasons for one rot of nourishment?
It is an old snow, struck at edges with scrape
of plow and black splash of road leavings. What I meant
was meaning, a trail through new; the leap
from mud to light. But it frosts my window
with icescape, unenterable dimensionless snow.
