For Barbara
The time is dead; it will not come again.
I could not make amends now if I tried:
It is not hard to bear another's pain.
Obsessive fantasies torment the brain.
Even Canute could not turn back the tide:
the time is dead; it will not come again.
Sweet charity should wayward thoughts restrain;
harsh words are spurred by selfishness and pride -
it is not hard to bear another's pain.
Once it might have been possible to retain
some hope the rift might mend; that hope has died.
The time is dead; it will not come again.
One can excuse, perhaps; one can explain
to others, not oneself; one may decide
it is not hard to bear another's pain.
Now what was lost is gone, regrets are vain,
and stubborn memories must stand aside.
The time is dead. It will not come again.
It is not hard to bear another's pain.
