The Road from Moffat
the young doe fell suddenly
from grace
on the high road
from Moffat into Tweeddale
where the forest hugs
both sides of a sharp bend.
the impact broke both her hind legs
but there was surprisingly
little blood.
we stopped the car
and saw at once
that the sharp bone had sliced
through muscle and skin,
knew we could do
nothing for her,
so we stood
guiltily undamaged,
only one headlight broken
and a dent in the wing
on the driver’s side,
listened to the rhythm
of her interminable breathing
as the autumn twilight
stretched out
in terrified incomprehension,
though it was less than a minute,
I think,
before she quivered and lay still
and we heard lark song
and the falling of distant water.
