Yours is land prised from the sea’s foul mouth its forests torn from rage and drench your father’s father’s Roman father turned the nagging tide cut the earth and pushed the waters straight back out to sea willow and oak and wild plum gnawed this black salt land pipey turves reedy torts the peat he’d cut to kindle and slowly warm you Monday and the scrubbed sheets dusted by a sharp fen blow It was always raining stooping you put down duckboards inside your drowning house I can see you Sophie summer 1862 even as Georgie shouts sucking coffee mess from his peat-black finger And then Sophie Susan’s skin suddenly so hot it hurt her everywhere Harriet and George William a crying silence 1890 you’re back with the girls again Look at the fen Sophia Only Sophia |
