Wondering Why
This house, I’m told, is hung with fear,
Its owner died some miles from here,
Went mad they say, then turned to seed,
Will never know why I’m so near.
Or who I am or what I need.
If still around then maybe he’d
Become concerned - or worse - about
Where my blind searching just might lead.
But though afraid, I’m not without
A wayward urge, this will to flout
Rebounding words and local eyes
That land so certain in their doubt.
Yet still they say I wasn’t wise
To pay that call, not recognise
What stays indoors remains and dies
Within these walls, and in those lies.
