From a Distance
Wild flowers tied on a handrail -
from a distance, flapping birds.
On the name tag - For my Brother,
words easy on the tongue.
Perhaps he came here as a bird watcher,
leaned out with binoculars
balancing over rough seas,
counted gulls, redshanks, curlews.
Some years white egrets come,
yellow feet under heirloom feathers,
forage in small hillocks of mud
out of sight of promenade walkers.
Tomorrow the bouquet will shuffle
along the high tide mark
cuffing concrete plinths built to keep
sea water out of the moat - brackish from fresh.
Maybe he discovered himself here
and on that day, in razor westerly winds
found something shuffling away,
cuffed deep inside himself.
