I Thought...
I thought if I’d be thinking of you on my knees I’d keep you inside me the way patience balances stones along Ialomitza river.
I thought if I’d kept my hands in prayer I’d hold you
the way stillness of stones does not scatter but has weight.
I thought if I’d be silent you’d hear me
the way love does when made quiet by the lips.
I thought if I’d stayed behind you I’d be close
the way shadow has a place through its intensity.
I thought if I’d bury my love under stones - a Midas’s secret - it would become precious
the way the ripped fi eld is the touch of summer turned into gold.
Years on I am still unable to free riverrocks from my childhood,
to match the sadness to its stone and the stone to its field,
to take back shadows from the mouth of sand.
Years on I still lean on words spoken long ago,
I still settle my fate with lines.
