Sun in the Kitchen

Strong light is very close.
Will I ever find the key
to the mounting evidence:

the planets held in place by your
attraction, the hole in the ozone,
the return of spring?

It’s those freak storms.
Shining like a lunatic
your smile plays hell
 
with all astronomy. That cold
luminous arc, the blinding white
ellipse. Like watching a drop

of water always just about to fall.
It’s the door of a safe slowly
swinging closed on a million

dollar room, spectacularly lit,
a black box shut in the ground
hiding its information like a skull.

But look both ways. Flames play
over the backs of your hands.
Even as we sit faces facing,

bushes break apart and it comes
out into the open. Now it openly
conceals its blazing secret

behind a cloud. Round a bend
a brisk traveller vanishes
down a path like a broken thread.

A few words spoken with calm.
And in the weedy lost mood
of the sea I can just make out

a pale green room rising and falling
near the bottom. There are two
small people sitting at a table.
