Warminster Weasel
Its head popped up in a ruff of green
and its black pin-point eyes stared
as if it had never seen mankind before.
I was behind glass but my heart
was pierced by the poise and
latent power of such a small beast.
It stood at ease in a tangle of weeds,
ignoring the intrusive cacophony of traffic,
sirens, human shouts and barking dogs.
It moved and the sinuous movement
of its nut-brown flanks,
might have terrified rats and mice.
Then it disappeared and I was left
with an entrancing memory and knew
my spectacle was a special gift.
