Phoenix Egg
When you’re gargled and sucked by the sea
a few million years then lifted off a beach
people get ideas. As if you could broadcast
from a foreign desk the kelpie legends
of Skye, the grace notes flecking Loch Coruisk
or moaning calls of guillemots. As if
cupped in the palm like a phoenix egg
some unthought-of thing might hatch
or the alchemy of curve, dusk mauve, unfathomed silence
precipitate just the right words on the page.
