Conversation with Daughter
‘I’m planning my evacuation to Mars’
she says to me. ‘If Hero and I
can get the theory of hyperspacial travel right
then Lily’s cousin Joe can build the ship.
We’ll have to take Lily as well
because she might feel a bit left out if we took her cousin.
There was a problem over how to recruit others
because we didn’t want to say
Do you want to come to Mars
because then they’d tell people
so I decided we’d just go
then observe them from Mars
and when we’d decided who we wanted
just come down and get them
making out we were aliens.
And we wouldn’t take you
because you’re a poet
and you’d use up all the oxygen
that we’d had to make out of nothing
and if we wanted poets
we’d come down and abduct some good ones
except all the good ones
are grumpy old men.’
