Tears of Honey and Gold by Jacqueline Karp
(Five Leaves, P O Box 81, Nottingham NG5 4ER, [email protected], £5, ISBN 0907123554, A5, 40pp, stapled)
There are moments like this in "Tales from the Guggenheim", "...What I liked best were Clemente’s illustrations of Ginsberg’s poems,/ handwritten by the poet on a scrawny New York afternoon,/ (some afternoon!)/ the poet’s writing scrawly and with forgotten words/ squashed slanting in from above like curly smoke from sinking chimney pots/ or old black trains shunting into a siding..." and like this (same poem), "...The large black cat in the next canvas/ crouches in a corner/ weeping tears of honey and gold." The latter doesn’t add much to its description of the picture, the former goes beyond that. Thankfully most of the poems here do the former so the misses are few and far between.
