Nothing for the Sun to Rise
Dawn cajoled the night away, gently but firmly
like a grandparent steers a child past a sweet shop.
Static night air became fresh perfumed dew.
I lay glistening, naked, vulnerable but comely;
sweat running from brow into hair close-cropped
wondering whatever became of you.
Sleeping dogs lay in new shadows beneath trees
as zephyrs harangued the sulking birds
into song and fulfilling their family ties.
Bushes shivered like puddles in the breeze
and I lay silent, for once content without words,
knowing it cost me nothing for the sun to rise.
Sleepy postmen and milkmen scurried like ants
blind to the ascent of the morning sun
oblivious to the miracle and its isolated glory.
I remembered with regret, how I’d missed the chance
of belonging to you and becoming as one
then recalled with a smile why I wasn’t that sorry.
