O
We share the house with a cool, slow breeze
that streams in and out of the open doors
and windows, tugs at the bottom of curtains,
stirs a mobile, lifts the pages of open books,
and massages our day-time tensions, fans
our slightly sweaty skin, drinking beer, and
watching over my sisters's six-month old boy,
mouth open like the mouth of a bottle of milk,
sighing from the shallows of his sleep, ringed
by pillows in the middle of the king-size bed.
The room is stilled by the spell of his calm.
Around him, silence lessens to sub-silence;
a halo of white noise. The whole house
is a boat slipped from its moorings, afloat
on the inland sea of our vague contentment,
ruddered by the undercurrent of his breath.
The papered walls belly out like sails;
subsiding day has got itself berthed inside
this space, where its breath and his are now
the same: a current that will oxygenate
the rest of our lives, the rest of the world.
