Perhaps you dreamed,
near the end,
of one last climb:
the twisting path
abruptly opening
on the white noise
of the waterfall,
the clink and chuckle
of birds invisibly
high in the trees,
the dead church,
its gravestones
tumbling.
At times the scenery
would lurch out of focus,
dim behind views
not glimpsed for years.
Then the chorus
unravelled
into its voices,
telling you
what you had always
had to say.
