Flowers of the Veld
for Emily Hobhouse
We watched her stumble, driven
through baking heat, through dust,
from tent to tent. Haunted
by multiplying graves
she held our dying children
like children of her own.
How much we’d have loved to give her
wild flowers of our regions -
frail yellow commelinas,
lobelia stands that look
like glimmering lakes in the grass,
blue lilies of the mountains,
proteas, fishbone cassias.
We had nothing to give but our prayers.
