Magazines
A number of established magazines have recently acquired new editors. The summer issue of Connections (‘the literary scene in the South’) is edited by Jane Hardy and builds on the work of former editors Narissa Knights and David Shields. This is a publication which increasingly looks as if its target audience is writers rather than readers, but it’s none the worse for that. The reviews are thoughtful and there’s a good piece here by Ian Parks on ‘How Poems Begin’. An attractive magazine. The London Magazine has been revived (rescued?) by the team of Sebastian Barker (editor) and Christopher Arkell (publisher). The changes from the magazine edited for so long by Alan Ross are subtle rather than overwhelming, with possibly a heightened concern for production quality - no bad thing at £6-95 a time. Excellent poems from Herbert Lomas and Paul Muldoon, a typically idiosyncratic piece from lain Sinclair and a stimulating look at R. S. Thomas from Richard Harries. David Herd and Robert Potts have inherited the editorial chair at Poetry Review. Changes in layout and design are definitely for the better, and the ubiquitous Ian Sansom’s piece on happiness is a cracker, but much of the poetry aspires to the same high-minded seriousness and tedium that characterised Peter Forbes’ editorship. As John Ashbery has it here, The whole is stasis between ends.’ Well, quite.
